Individual Therapy in Columbus, Ohio

Individual therapy gives one person a confidential space to work through what they are carrying, at their own pace, with a licensed clinician who knows them. At Serving Youth Ohio we provide individual therapy to children, adolescents, and adults ages 6 and above throughout Central Ohio, in our Columbus office and by telehealth.

What this looks like

Your first session is about getting oriented, not diving into the hardest thing. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what has already been tried, and what a good outcome would look like for you. From there the two of you set the direction together.

Sessions typically run 45 to 60 minutes and are scheduled weekly at the start, moving to every other week as things stabilize. We use evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy and trauma-informed care, matched to the person rather than applied from a script. For younger clients, sessions often incorporate play, art, or activity-based work.

Who this is for

  • Anxiety, worry, panic, or difficulty with school and work performance
  • Depression, low mood, withdrawal, or loss of interest
  • Trauma, including abuse, loss, community violence, and medical trauma
  • Grief and bereavement
  • Difficulty with emotional regulation, anger, or impulse control
  • Adjustment to major life changes: divorce, relocation, foster placement, a new diagnosis
  • Self-esteem, identity, and peer relationship concerns

How this is covered

We are in-network with Molina Healthcare, Buckeye Health Plan, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and CareSource. For clients covered by these Ohio Medicaid plans, services are typically provided at little to no out-of-pocket cost. Private pay is welcome, and a limited number of reduced-rate spots are available for clients experiencing financial hardship.

Frequently asked questions.

We see clients ages 6 and above. For children under 6, family therapy or a referral to an early childhood specialist is usually the better fit, and we are happy to help you find one.

It depends on what you are working on. Some concerns resolve in eight to twelve sessions; trauma work and long-standing patterns take longer. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly rather than leaving it open-ended.

For most adults and older teens, research shows comparable outcomes. For younger children we usually recommend in-person sessions, at least to start.
